“The centurion sent friends to say to [Jesus]: ‘Lord, …I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.’”

Luke 7:6-7
I read a COVID-19 story that gripped my heart. Five members of the same family were stricken with the virus, but only the father became extremely ill. As he lay in a coma, his family and friends prayed at every hour of the day for several days. Finally, it seemed that death was imminent. But one doctor, a man of faith, spoke up and proposed one last treatment. With the wife’s permission, he tried it, and it worked. Later the man marveled that he had been restored to health while so many others had not.

Imagine how the centurion’s servant marveled at his healing in Jesus’ time as recorded in Luke 7. The physician Luke gives us this beautiful account of a healing Jesus performed while He was not even anywhere near the sick man.

Initially, the centurion’s friends told Jesus that the centurion deserved to have Jesus heal his servant. But the centurion himself knew he wasn’t worthy of even being in Jesus’ presence. His humble request was granted. We see that the power of life and death is in the hands of our Sovereign Lord.
