“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

Colossians 3:1-2
“Follow your heart”? But our hearts stray from the standard the Lord sets for us.

Our hearts must hold to an unchanging standard, the one set for us in His Word by our Holy God. “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:12-13). The One to whom we give account is Jesus who knows our hearts (see Revelation 2:23).

God’s standard raises us with Jesus. The cross drove Him to the tomb but also launched Him to heaven. We live with resurrection perspective. Still, how can sinful people like you and me ever achieve hearts that are holy and are set on things above? “Jesus takes all our bad into himself on the cross that he might fill us with all the good that he is” (Chad Bird, 2021). We are raised to His standard by following one heart: His!
