“So the king took his signet ring from his finger and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.”

Esther 3:10
Our own sin often clouds our ability to see the stakes of the battle we wage in this world. We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places (see Ephesians 6:12).

In the same way, God’s people in Esther’s day had no idea what an enemy they had in high places. His name was Haman, and he was an Agagite, who were ancient adversaries of God and His people. When given the opportunity, Haman resolved not only to kill Mordecai but to also wipe out the whole of the Jewish people!

Friends, it’s important to remember that we’re part of an apocalyptic battle. This should lead us to take our own sin more seriously and the people who oppose us more graciously. It should lead us to prayer before the God whose victory is already assured. It should also lead us to look for a champion who will represent us in the heavenly realms—with the power to not only protect us but also to vanquish the foe of our souls. With such a champion, we can find peace and rest in the middle of the battle.
