“Put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; …and put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:22, 24

Our new self is created when we come to faith in Christ. However, the old self which was dealt the deathblow on the cross will not completely disappear until we go to be with Him in heaven. Until then, we are to cultivate our new, born-again self.

It’s been said that the struggle we face in our spiritual selves is like having a good dog and a vicious dog living in us, both constantly fighting for supremacy. If we feed the vicious one, it will grow stronger and overpower the good one. Think about what that means in your own life. Are you consuming inappropriate books, movies, TV shows, online media, etc. that inflame your sinful desires? Do you keep company only with friends who do not know the Lord? Or are you nourishing yourself by getting into God’s Word and relying daily on His promises?

Without Jesus, our old self is irredeemable. But when we put on the new self created by God, the old dies away. Remember that this good work was accomplished for you at the cross. Jesus goes with you each step of the journey.
