“After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.”

Genesis 3:24
Before Adam and Eve sinned, their hearts were like the garden they lived in—able to bear only good fruit. When they sinned, their hearts became barren like the world around them. It causes me to think about the war zones faced by those in the military. In the past 20 years, our soldiers have grappled with a similar double tragedy, going off to barren lands and engaging in the aftermath of barren hearts.

We not only feel the loss of the garden, but also the loss of the human race. I recently saw a headline about a ransomware attack on a hospital that resulted in the death of a baby. I recoiled. Who could possibly find it in their heart to kill a baby? Yet this comes in a country which turns a blind eye to the killing of millions of babies in the womb.

Although human beings still bear the image of God, the barrenness of their hearts is ever before us. But our barren hearts are not without hope. The Lord has spent the whole of human history bringing desolate ones back to life, reminding us that lost souls can be found in Jesus.
