“The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.”

Psalm 34:7
Prisons can be dangerous places, as most inmates would testify. Josh told me the first thing he did when he arrived in prison was get a knife. Then he joined a gang so he would have people to protect him.

In the Bible, David also knew something about dangerous situations and about being afraid.

1 Samuel 21:10-15 describes a time when, in danger from Saul, David fled and found himself before the Philistine king, Achish. David was afraid of King Achish, so he pretended to be insane and was sent away by the king.

But David learned. He learned that he could trust God to protect him. It was out of that experience he wrote Psalm 34.

“I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears …. This poor man called, and the LORD heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles” (vv. 4, 6).

I assured Josh that we too can trust God to protect us. Just think of what a privilege this is. Not only do we have angels protecting us, but we also have the Greater David himself, Jesus Christ, our King, the One who fights His enemies and ours.
