“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Deuteronomy 31:8
When Moses was 120 years old, the time came to designate his successor. Joshua would be the man. It may have felt to him like those were very big sandals to fill! But he would go forth with multiple assurances that the Lord Himself was with him.

The enemy was real, and Joshua needed the witness to God’s faithfulness. The Lord spoke through Moses in a speech that starts out telling all the people to be strong and courageous, to not be afraid or terrified, to know that the Lord would go with them, and to be assured that He would never leave them or forsake them.

And then, remarkably, the Lord gives the exact same charge and assurance to Joshua. God tells him to not be afraid or terrified, to know that the Lord would go with him, and to be assured that He would never leave him or forsake him.

I’ve underlined in my Bible these assuring, encouraging words. We, too, go into the world and face the enemy and his forces, equipped for battle, anxiety derailed, certain that God is with us, and confident that He will never leave us.
