“Listen, O daughter, consider and give ear: Forget your people and your father’s house. The king is enthralled by your beauty; honor him, for he is your lord.”

Psalm 45:10-11
A few years ago Charles and I took a course on the Gospel of John, and from day one it was more like poetry than academic learning. Chapter by chapter, the gospel unfolded in our hearts and melted us with the love of Christ. We watched in wonder as Jesus turned water into wine, sought the woman at the well, and poured out His passion for us. When we came to the moment of His arrest and heard Him say to the soldiers, “I’m the one you want; let these go free,” we were all undone. I could hardly help writing a poem immediately to express the awe we felt: “‘Was ever love like this?’ the teacher said./ And we as one, enraptured, shook our head.”

Poetry has been the language of love in every culture since the dawn of time. At the heart of the Bible is a poem rich with words that we can sing to our King and hear Him sing to us: “My Beloved is mine and I am his” (Song of Solomon 2:16), and “He sets me at his banqueting table, and his banner over me is love” (v. 4).

Let your heart be stirred by Jesus’ exquisite expressions of His love for you.
