“For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.”
Luke 22:27
Immediately after Jesus’s heartbreaking declaration about the body and blood, His disciples began to fight over who’d be first in Jesus’ kingdom. Doesn’t this remind you that apart from the work of His Holy Spirit, we’re both ungrateful guests and unworthy hosts?
Jesus rebukes His disciples. While they fight over who would sit next to Him, they are reminded that the Host of hosts came to serve. He did not come first to recline, but to wash the feet of those who draw up to His table. He’d wash their very hearts with His blood. In just a short while, those who would join Him at His left and right would be on crosses, not thrones.
Indeed, Jesus’s disciples would join Him in His kingdom and would sit on thrones over Israel (vv. 28-30). But, as Jesus had now said many times, humiliation must come first. In The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy didn’t immediately ascend to their thrones. First, Aslan had to die as their servant and savior and rise again. The pathway to exaltation always starts in humiliation.
