“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

Matthew 5:3-4
One of the loneliest moments in my early faith was also one of the sweetest.

I was finally free and living in a transitional housing program on a ranch out in the desert. One Sunday after worship service, I sat on the back deck and was overcome by the wreckage I had caused, where it all had led me, and how grateful I was that God still accepted me.

Feeling fully surrendered to Him in my grief, I was experiencing godly mourning. The Lord spoke to me through Matthew 5 in that moment, reminding me that I now belonged to His kingdom. My need and my dependance were finding their fulfillment in His power and love.

Jesus says that when we are at our end, fully aware of our intense need for God and His mercy, we are welcomed into His kingdom. When we mourn for all that is not as it should be, we’re comforted by our compassionate King. Knowing this opens a view of reality that we cannot access outside of surrendering to Him. In our submission, repentance, and weakness, the loving God of the Universe welcomes us and meets us where we are.
