“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

John 13:34
If I knew that this was going to be my last day to live, how would I spend the time? Jesus knew that He was living His last day. The cross lay before Him where He would suffer and die a horrible death. As His time on earth drew to an end, He chose to spend the time with His friends. He shared the Passover meal with them, washed their feet, and spoke blessing over them. He served each one, even the one He knew would betray Him ,the one He knew would deny Him, and the ones He knew would run away and leave Him to face the end alone. Yet He loved them and encouraged them:

“My body, broken – remember” (see Luke 22:19).

“My blood, shed – remember” (see v. 20).

After the meal and after Judas left to carry out his betrayal, they sang a hymn and went to the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus spent His last hours talking with His Father, agonizing over the most important event in human history: His death on the cross. His spirit was willing, but His body was weak. Yet He willingly suffered because of the joy that was set before Him.
