“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Ephesians 2:8-9
If you spent a bit of time with me, you’d soon learn that I love fishing. Unlike many children who learn fishing from their fathers, I was introduced to it by my mother. My fishing passion has always reaffirmed my gratitude for her influence on me. There is rarely a time when I am enjoying fishing miles out on the ocean that I do not think of her and how she shaped me as a man. I consider my love of fishing which Mom passed along to me to be a gift.

Paul reminds us that the faith God gives us is a gift, a gift which makes our salvation possible and is granted purely by His amazing grace. It is also the very foundation for who we become in Christ (v. 4-6). This faith calls us to live through the power of the Spirit (v. 10). Who we are and how we live are not the result of our work, but Jesus’. We, in turn, are the recipients of the greatest gift that God can give.

My passion for fishing was given to me when I was young, and it has brought a lot of fun into my life. But God’s passion for me has brought the gift of eternal life!
