“And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross!”

Philippians 2:8
I read a story to my children years ago called The Quiltmaker’s Gift. In it an old woman sews beautiful quilts which she gives only to the poor and needy. The king heard of this and wanted one, but she explained that because he had many riches, she would not give him one. Sadly, he accepted the fact that he’d have to give away everything he owned in order to receive one of her quilts. Over the course of the story, he does this, and he learns the joy in giving all he has to others. When he has but one treasure left, he offers it to the woman, and she in turn presents him with one of her lovely blankets.

While it is a beautiful story, I remember how it made me think of my King, Jesus. But my King willingly gave up all that He had for me, not motivated by what He would receive in return. He lived to do the Father’s will. Our King said, “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life” (John 6:40).

Our King lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death for us.
