“But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.”

Luke 15:32
Earlier in the month, we talked about being a lost people, a people removed from the sweet fellowship we were meant to enjoy with the Lord as in the Garden of Eden. Every person feels the pain of that separation from fellowship with God. But for Christians, it does not have the final word. The Lord is not content with a lost people, nor will He abandon His people in exile.

This is the heart of the father (unlike the elder brother) in the parable of the prodigal son. He looked upon his broken son with compassion, bore the humiliation his son deserved by running to meet him, and showered him with love and affection. The son didn’t even have a chance to fully repent. Before he could apologize, the father called for the clothes befitting a son and suitable for a welcome home celebration.

Like the prodigal son, we may still feel far off from the Father. But His love closes that gap. Jesus Christ has done for us what we can’t do for ourselves. He has restored us to fellowship with Him and brought us home by His blood.
