“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness … and … to all who have longed for his appearing.”

2 Timothy 4:7, 8
In time our earthly life will draw to a close, and we will understand implicitly Paul’s words about finishing the race. Paul saw his life as an offering of praise and service to God, a life redeemed from the path to hell he previously traveled. He viewed the end of his life as one final drink offering being poured out as he bid farewell to his life and ministry. He did not want to be remembered and celebrated, for he knew the sinner he was, undeserving of God’s mercy.

When we as believers close our eyes in death, we will open them to see the welcoming arms of Jesus, who will give us the “crown of righteousness.” It is not bestowed as the final reward for a life well lived. Rather, it is a crown Jesus won for us, given to those who “have loved his appearing” and have put their faith in Him.

We run life’s marathon with Christ leading us and one day carrying us across the finish line. Fix your eyes on Him, your eternal hope today. If Jesus is your Savior, you too will one day finish your race and receive His glorious, unmerited reward.
