“Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family.”

Hebrews 2:11
God uses various forms of relational imagery to communicate how He loves us. In today’s reading, Jesus refers to believers as brothers, depicting a sibling relationship. Later when we are called God’s children, the father image is used. Genesis 15:6 tells us Abraham’s belief in the Lord was counted as righteousness and that He was a friend of God.

But when it comes to giving us a portrait of His love for the children of Israel, the church, and all believers, He uses the most intimate of human relationships. God calls Himself a husband to Israel. Jesus calls Himself a bridegroom and the church His bride. It is only in marital union that two become one. The picture of matrimony is woven throughout Scripture, starting with the first couple, Adam and Eve, and concluding in Revelation with the marriage supper of the Lamb.

This month’s Anchor focuses on God’s relational interactions with the ones He treasures. The Bible shows us how He delights to pour out His love, a love that captures and transforms the hearts of His beloved bride—you and me.
