“Be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’ So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.’”
Hebrews 13:5-6
In the early days of my incarceration, I was told I should expect many of my friends and family members to gradually move on with their lives and become less present in mine. The years passed on in prison, and this proved to be true. However, no one predicted that I would discover a better presence, Someone more faithful than any friend or relative.
God’s presence has come to me in ways I had not experienced before. The fact that God is faithful to His Word, Himself, and His people has become the bedrock of my faith in Him.
Although His chastening hand is painful, it also is proof of His love. As Moses sang before the congregation of Israel, “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just” (Deuteronomy 32:4). He is the faithful and faultless Rock on whom I stand. He will never leave me nor forsake me. And His chastisement—maybe especially—demonstrates His faithfulness. He has loved me enough to draw me to Him, using the means He knows are best. Our faithful Father does this, whether we are behind prison walls or not.
