“The LORD said, ‘What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.’”

Genesis 4:10
When America and her allies put Nazis on trial after WWII, they wanted justice for the horrific crimes that were committed. When Martin Luther King, Jr., cried for justice, he wanted America to fulfill the promise of her founding. The sting of injustice leaves one of the bitterest wounds in the human soul, and the cry for justice looks to God for its answer.

After Adam and Eve sinned and were banished from the garden, we received a gruesome picture of the effects of sin as Cain murdered his brother Abel. Imagine how Adam and Eve felt as this happened with their sons. The thought of it turns the stomach. But God heard the cry of Abel’s blood. The brokenness of this world will not go unanswered.

Exiles may be marginalized—they may even be killed—but there will be a day when justice rolls down like water. Every wrong will be righted, and every tear will be wiped from our eyes. The blood of Jesus speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. Justice finds its fulfillment in Jesus so that mercy may find its recipient in you and me.
