“Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author, and perfecter of our faith.”

Hebrews 12:1b-2a

Several years ago my husband and I ran a half-marathon. It took months of training and discipline to prepare for the big day. There were times we wondered if it was worth it. But what a thrill it was to cross the finish line!

1 Timothy 4:8 says, “Physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise in both the present life and the life to come.” Our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), and we are called to take care of them, but our spiritual condition is even more vital. We live in shells that are vulnerable to pain and sickness. One day they’ll wear out. The Word of God trains and equips our souls (2 Timothy 3:16-17) to develop genuine, lasting faith and godliness within us.

The Bible is our trainer, motivator, and gauge for running the race God has marked out for us. Let us fasten our gaze to it in prayer. Like a runner pressing toward the finish line, run the race with perseverance and purpose, fixing your eyes on the eternal prize: Jesus!
