“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33
Life’s tragedies can push any of us into desperation and sorrow. Our daily trials may not be broadcasted widely as something like 9/11, but certainly they carry deep pain, too. A couple loses another baby through miscarriage; a family deals daily with grief after a loved one took his life; a spouse needs 24-hour care following a traumatic brain injury; someone resorts to anger that erupts into chaos; jobs are lost; cars crash; diseases overtake; a friend betrays; depression descends.

We need God.

He cares about us. He promises that one day He will end all brokenness and suffering. We may not understand why He has not ended it yet, but we do know that He came and entered into it with us through Jesus.

Christian author and musician Andrew Peterson wrote a choral song which depicts this tension:

“Do you feel the world is broken?/ We do./ Do you feel the shadows deepen?/ We do./ But do you know that all the dark won’t stop/ the light from getting through?/ We do./ Do you wish that you could see it all made new?/  We do” (2018).
