“Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself. Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes.”

Proverbs 26:4-5
At first glance, these two proverbs appear to be the very definition of a contradiction, sending us down two conflicting paths. Which one is the right? Well, both are. A wise person understands her words are important. What she says and how she answers someone with whom she is having a discussion requires a certain sensitivity in dealing with difficult matters. Before she speaks on any subject, she takes the time to discern who it is she is speaking with, what the underlying presuppositions are, and what type of response is going to fit the moment best.

As we interact with others in the world, especially when we speak about the claims of Christ, we will encounter arguments that represent both wisdom and folly. By God’s grace we must seek to show wisdom in those situations, answering in such a way that we do not fall into the folly of the world or dishonor God. There will be times when we should be silent; there will be other times when we should speak up.

May our words find that fine line more often than not!
