“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

John 14:27
Whether it be for the whole earth or for our own families, peace is something we desire. We aren’t likely to find it in the world’s framework: through money or government programs or vacations or “mindfulness” exercises. The peace of Jesus passes all understanding. It meets us in hospital rooms, at lonely kitchen tables, in back seats of churches, on long trips. Wherever we are where our hearts feel shaky.
The Living Bible paraphrase says it this way: “And the peace I give isn’t fragile like the peace the world gives.” When we were packing for a cross-country move, my wife had me write “FRAGILE” on some special boxes. I cringed when I saw the movers toss them cavalierly into the truck, knowing how easily those things could break. But God’s peace is not fragile. It’s unbreakable, and it’s ours to enjoy in our troubled world.
All sorts of things will attempt to break our peace. We may even feel tossed about, not unlike a packed box of breakable items. Open the gift of Jesus’ peace and feel it wash over your heart today.
