“We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”

Romans 5:3-4
You may have read Elisabeth Elliott’s book Through Gates of Splendor (1957) or seen the movie End of the Spear (2005). Both tell of how on January 8, 1956, Elisabeth Elliott’s husband Jim and four others were speared to death by members of the Waodani tribe living in the jungles of Ecuador, with whom the men were trying to share the gospel. Two years later, Jim’s widow Elisabeth and their daughter Valerie, along with a few others, went back to live with the Waodani, to learn their language and culture, and to share the good news of salvation through Jesus. They told why it was that He had to suffer. As a result, many from the tribe—even some who speared the men—came to faith.

While the Apostle Paul was surrounded by prison guards, he took the opportunity to share the gospel with those guarding him (Philippians 1:12-13). God used Paul’s time of suffering to change the hearts of others for their eternal good.

No matter when or where it is that you suffer, ask God to open the doors to share the gospel and tell others why Jesus had to suffer.
