“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’”

2 Corinthians 12:9
If you spend time on social media, you might have read some humblebragging. A humblebrag occurs when people mention a weakness they’re secretly proud of. An example might be, “Partied instead of studying. Can’t believe I still got an A!”

A quick read of 2 Corinthians 12 might cause us to think the apostle Paul is humblebragging. “Look at me! I’m so strong despite this thorn in my side.” Yet what we really see is a man totally dependent on God. Paul’s desire was for Jesus Christ to receive all the glory as His power was displayed in Paul’s weak body.

There were times as a caregiver that I felt as if this call was just too much. I was tired and stressed, but I pushed through with sheer determination. Those were the times when humblebragging was a temptation. “Look at me! I’m persevering through my exhaustion! Yay for me!”

When we persist in our own strength, we’re actually seeking glory for ourselves. When we depend on the Holy Spirit and persevere in His strength despite our weakness, Christ alone receives the glory.
