“I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.”

Proverbs 4:11
I read an account in Nelson’s Complete Book of Stories (2000) of a teenager who left home to attend college. His mother, worrying about him, gave him a Bible and printed a verse of Scripture on the flyleaf. He soon discovered college life to be an endless series of parties, on which he spent all the money he could. On one occasion, he needed some cash for whiskey, so he pawned his Bible for it. Despite his foolishness and self-indulgence, he eventually turned to his studies and made it through college to become a doctor.

One day he treated a dying man who asked for his “book.” After the man passed away, the doctor noticed the man’s “book” among his effects. He couldn’t believe his eyes—it was the very Bible his mother had inscribed and given to him years before! Retreating to his office, he began poring over it. Several hours later he knelt and asked Jesus Christ to be his Savior and Lord. Dr. W. P. Mackay later became a minister and the writer of the old gospel hymn “Revive Us, Again.”

God’s Word has power to put us on the right paths.
