“Mordecai the Jew was second in rank to King Xerxes, … and held in high esteem by his many fellow Jews, because he worked for the good of his people and spoke up for the welfare of all the Jews.”

Esther 10:3
You might have noticed the conclusion of the book of Esther feels rather incomplete. Sure, Mordecai was exalted and was able to be a blessing to God’s people. But what of King Xerxes and his often arbitrary and cruel reign? Or of his self-exaltation as a god? What of the exile of God’s people? Were they still called to sing of Him in a foreign land?

None of this is resolved in their time, nor is it in ours today. As in Esther’s day, we are called to wait upon the Lord in our exile. His ongoing work of salvation and provision is a foretaste of that day when we can abide in the presence of God and call it home. The book of Esther parts the curtains for us so we can see the hidden hand of God at work until that day when faith becomes sight.

With that in mind, we will spend the remainder of this month examining pictures of life in Christ in the interim. The story of Esther practically begged for the coming of Christ as its fulfillment, and it beckons us to look to Him anew for our present comforts and future joys.
