“Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations.”

Proverbs 27:23-24
Wise shepherds in the ancient world knew every situation or ailment of their flocks. Injuries, disease, pests, pregnancy, and many other conditions posed real threats to the health of the sheep and ultimately to the livelihood of the shepherd and his family. As this proverb suggests, there was a temptation to think that a large flock would remain a large flock no matter what the shepherd did.

But the wise know better. They know that riches can evaporate quickly, and so they keep a close watch on what has been given to them. Even when things are going well, a wise person prepares for harder times. In other words, he is mindful of good stewardship.

As one of God’s children, you have been entrusted with something even more valuable than your family or home, your church or ministry, your business or your wealth. It’s the good news of salvation through Jesus. Steward it well, treasuring it and passing it along to others who do not yet know Him. In Him you really do have a crown that is secure through all generations.
