“Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for the present life and the life to come.”

1 Timothy 4:7b-8
In the middle of a grueling workout before an upcoming race, I thought about how futile it all seemed—why put myself through so much physical pain for a lousy finisher medal that would eventually collect dust in my closet? That day as I trained, I asked God to refocus my thoughts to strengthen me for service to Him. I prayed, Show me some way that there is eternal value in what I’m doing.

A short time later, my husband suffered a massive stroke that nearly took his life. When it happened, I remembered my prayer that day while running. I soon realized that the endurance and physical strength I gained would indeed serve me in the hard months and years to come.

1 Timothy 4:8 tells us that physical training is of value; it may help us manage stress as we face life’s challenges. However, physical training alone will not prepare any of us for all that God has for us. We’re called to a life of prayer, studying His Word, and fellowship with other believers. In this way, we journey through life with Jesus, always with the finish line in sight.
