“I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”

2 Timothy 1:5
When Paul thinks about Timothy, his partner in gospel labors, he recalls the spiritual heritage that had influenced Timothy’s life. If you have parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so on, who passed along a tradition of faith in Jesus, you too are rich in that heritage.

Timothy was spiritually mature. His worth was not in his personality, ingenuity, or power to “win friends and influence people.” Paul knew that Timothy’s sincere faith in Jesus Christ and desire to serve the kingdom were central. Where did Timothy learn this? Certainly along the way from Paul, but even before that he was trained and raised in this faith from godly parents and grandparents. Such faith was first in his grandmother Lois and then in his mother Eunice. These godly women passed down a heritage of robust faith in Christ.

What kind of legacy will you pass down in your family? Show your children or the young people in your life the beauty of God in His Word and world, the reality of their sin, and the preciousness of the gospel. Invest in their eternity.
