“You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing to you and not be silent.”

Psalm 30:11-12
Scripture commands us to sing to the Lord and praise Him because He is holy. This is easy when things are going well. But what about when trouble comes and we feel that God is far from us? Singing and praising may be the last things we want to do.

One way to take on the questioning, doubting, despairing, and fearing is to recall a song of praise and sing it. Sing it aloud, or sing it to yourself. Sing it in the middle of the night or while driving in traffic. This would be bringing to God a “sacrifice of praise.” A sacrifice costs us something, doesn’t it? To sing and praise in the dark times is hard, but see how it will begin to calm you, re-focus you, and comfort you.

Remember Paul and Silas in prison after they had been beaten nearly senseless? Around midnight they began singing praises to the Lord. During their songs, the Lord worked a marvelous miracle. Not only were they loosed from their chains, but also the jailer and his entire household were saved. What a wonderful reward for the sacrifice of praise!
