“Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”

Matthew 1:20
Take note of how the angel addresses Joseph, referring to him as a “son of David.” God didn’t pick just any first-century Jewish man to steward the life of His Son. He picked a faithful son of David. The only other person in the New Testament to be called this is Jesus (Paul later affirmed this in Romans 1:3). And it’s a title that came with authority, reminding Joseph of his royal lineage and preparing him for the task ahead.

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you too are identified with Him. It’s why you are called a Christian. You are a son or daughter of the living God. You bear the stamp and the identity of the One who came to earth to live and die for you. You ought to both tremble and take heart at the wonder of it all.

The march of salvation history, the fulfillment of prophecy, the long-awaited promise was on Joseph’s doorstep and in his life. What a holy moment this must have been for him. What a time to celebrate with holy awe and kneel in humble adoration! It should cause us to stop and worship as well.
