“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”

2 Timothy 2:15
In every generation the church has had to be on guard against those who twist the truth and impose it on God’s people. Everywhere you and I turn, we can find variations on Christianity to suit just about anything a person could want Scripture to say. This is nothing new.

Paul had already warned Timothy in his first letter about false teachers when he spoke of those who had “an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words” (1 Timothy 6:4). Here in his second letter, he urges Timothy to directly address false teachers, telling them of the inevitable result of such fruitless, bitter debating. It ruins the hearers (see v. 14) and leads to spiritual shipwreck.

Conversely, Timothy is to be a diligent, disciplined pastor, working to faithfully and rightly handle the Word as he teaches his people. The calling of all pastors is no different today. Pray for your pastors who earnestly desire to proclaim the gospel with clarity, boldness, love, and joy.

And think about it: aren’t we all to be faithful students of God’s Word?
