“What does the worker gain from his toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on men.”
Ecclesiastes 3:9-10
The teacher says in Ecclesiastes 3:10-15 that if God has placed us in the context of this created order of time, it creates a problem—that you and I are busy with time. We’re seeking to get more time. We’re consumed with time. Some studies report that as Americans check their cell phones more than 100 times a day, one of the most common reasons for checking the device is to know the time. The clock governs nearly every part of our daily lives. And it gives many of us the feeling that we are constantly late and have too much on our plate.
“As we make our way in this hectic, confused culture, our greatest need is the practical, life-changing wisdom that only our Creator can provide. We need to pause and look to God—who He is, who He has made us to be, and how the good news of Jesus can genuinely reorder our daily lives for the better” (Ian Carmichael, 2022).
Let the Ecclesiastes writer cause you to think of directing your life according to the purposes of God, knowing that He will use this labor to build His kingdom and glorify Jesus.
