“Give me a sign of your goodness, that my enemies may see it and be put to shame, for you, O LORD, have helped me and comforted me.”

Psalm 86:17
Throughout history, war has existed. Even at the time of this writing, the threat of another world war looms large. We always hope that engagement in battle will lead to victory. But more often than not, it’s hard to tell who the winner is.

The enemies I most frequently battle are of a different sort all together. Discouragement is the first to emerge when the circumstances of my life spiral out of control or when relationships break down. Quickly, that may lead to depression and despair. Once in that pit, the struggle to get a grip seems futile. If I lose sight of God’s goodness and wallow in misery, my own helplessness overwhelms me. My only hope is to be saved, much like a helicopter rescue when the victim is required to be still and let the rescuer do the work.

Stand firm in Christ, and you will spiral towards hope rather than slipping into despair. “Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit” (Romans 5:3-5).
