“Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.”

Psalm 119:133
The Word of God is so powerful and majestic, yet at the same time so intimate and practical that it reaches into the daily, often mundane facets of our lives.

I read a story of a high schooler whose buddies urged him to join them in a bar. But the young man, whose mother was an alcoholic, had memorized verses from Proverbs about alcohol abuse. He explained to his friends that addiction ran in his family. He had the courage to quote Scripture to them: “Wine is a mocker, and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise” (Proverbs 20:1). They continued to coax him. He replied, “In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper” (Proverbs 23:32). They accused him of rejecting their company, to which he said, “If sinners entice you, do not give in to them” (Proverbs 1:10). “Leave him be,” one friend responded. “He’s so full of Scripture, we can’t do a thing with him!”

The Word is our powerful answer to sin each day because Christ Jesus, the Living Word who left heaven to rescue us, has conquered sin in our place.
