“In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge … Be my rock of refuge to which I can always go.”

Psalm 71:1, 3
It is likely that David penned Psalm 71 in his old age. Though his “strength is gone” (v. 9) and he is “old and gray” (v. 18), he recalls God’s faithfulness to him since his youth. His life has seen “troubles, many and bitter” (v. 20), but he knows the One who holds him up, increases his honor, and restores his life. David’s life was marked by singing in the storm.

His heart ached over the rebellion of Absalom, his son. He turned to the Lord who had been with him every step of the way since he was just a boy. And he could not help but praise Him: “My mouth is filled with your praise, declaring your splendor all day long” (v. 15). There were many times when David’s life appeared on the surface to be stormy; but beneath the tempest, he was anchored in his Lord.

When the wind and waves are their worst, affirm God’s love and goodness, not only in your heart, but also before others. The storm may not be automatically removed, but your singing through it will give testimony to the Lord who carries you in your weakness above it all.
