“Therefore the LORD himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”
Isaiah 7:14
Throughout the Bible God came down to His people, giving signs of His love: a rainbow, a ram, a burning bush. He promised a Savior whose sign was that He’d be born of a virgin and named “God with us.”
Centuries later that sign became reality. “This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was… found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. … All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’—which means ‘God with us’” (Matthew 1:18, 22-23). Luke wrote, “There were shepherds… in the fields nearby…. An angel of the Lord appeared… and… said to them, ‘…Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger’” (2:8-12).
When I was hospitalized briefly, friends stopped by, each visit a sign of love. God, in His profound love, came to be with us, visiting us in the flesh.
