“When you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. …Your Father knows what you need before you ask him. This, then, is how you should pray.”

Matthew 6:7-9
I come from a family of drug addicts and alcoholics, and I don’t think I met a Christian until I was a teenager. If you’re like me, no one ever taught you how to pray.

Praying should come naturally to us, but it doesn’t. We need help talking to God. The good news is that we don’t have to “fake it ‘til we make it.” God knows that we need help talking to Him, so He teaches us how we should approach Him in what I like to call “The Lord’s School of Prayer”(a.k.a., The Lord’s Prayer).

Before Jesus utters the first words of the Lord’s Prayer, He says, “This, then, is how you should pray.” Do you see what’s happening there? Apparently, those who were following Jesus didn’t know how to talk to God, so Jesus says, “I’ll show you how. Follow my lead.”

If you’re struggling to pray, remember that God not only commands us to do so (Ephesians 6:18), but He also teaches us how. When you don’t have the words, He’ll give you the words. So let’s enter the Lord’s school of prayer together and learn how to talk to our Father in heaven.

Insight

When it comes to prayer, don’t say, “I don’t know how, so I can’t.” Because of Jesus, say, “I don’t know how, but I know He’ll help me.”
