“The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.”

John 10:3
Jesus liked to use references to sheep and shepherds in His teaching. I have heard it said that sheep are not known for their good sense, often unknowingly choosing a dangerous path. Only the voice and care of the shepherd prevent disastrous results. Thousands of years after Jesus spoke of these things, the metaphor still resonates with us.

Looking back to the days of my youth, I see how like a sheep I was, wandering off of the path that had been laid out for me by a godly mother. I wanted my way and resisted restraint. Praise God that the prayers of my mother on my behalf were heard and answered! Because I had responded to the voice of Jesus as a child, I did know His voice and remember responding to His call. I did change direction at crucial junctures of my life. “His sheep follow him because they know his voice” (v. 4).

Do you feel the Shepherd pulling at your heart? Listen to His call. Make Jesus the Lord and Shepherd of your life. He promises that those who come under His care will “have life, and have it to the full” (v. 10).
