“I will rescue the lame and gather those who have been scattered. I will give them praise and honor in every land where they were put to shame.”

Zephaniah 3:19
In today’s reading, the prophet expectantly looks forward to the day of Jesus’ return. If it were up to you to make a list of people the Lord should honor on that day, who would be on your list? Heroes of faith like Abraham, Moses, or David? Would it include someone who has encouraged your own faith? Would you immediately put “the lame” on your list? God does.

Rarely do we see the disabled or marginalized on the top of our lists. But if we want to live in accordance with God’s character and priorities, we need to rethink this. God’s heart goes out to those with disabilities. He is more like a shepherd gently picking up a lame sheep and carrying it to safety than a busy executive brushing past a person in a wheelchair without regard. God will take the shame that has been heaped on His people and turn it into praise!

What good news for all of us, because we need His rescue and redemption from our broken and disabled hearts. Is there someone you’ve ignored because their disability made you nervous or uncomfortable? Show them honor today.
