“Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever. They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the LORD.”

Psalm 112:6-7
Mary was thoroughly shaken when the angel suddenly appeared to her. At hearing his announcement, she asked how it could be. But her inquiry was not of doubt (as with Zechariah). Her curious question made perfect sense since she was not yet married to Joseph. She knew that what Gabriel was saying could not be done by human means. And truly, the Son of God could only be conceived by God. What would be impossible for man was completely possible for the Almighty.

Don’t miss the wonderful imagery of the miraculous birth as it relates to us now. The changing of our hearts is something only God can do through His Holy Spirit. It’s a radical idea that cuts against our man-centered religious framework. We need Someone outside of ourselves to save us.

Mary knew—and we know too—that favor by God is not earned or deserved. This Christmas, return to the shock and awe Mary experienced when the angel came and declared that she was highly favored. We do not deserve His favor, and yet like Mary, because of the life of that baby, we are saved.

Insight

Mary didn’t say, “Well, of course you’d choose me. I’ve been faithful and good!” She said, “I’m the Lord’s servant. Let it be with me as you say.”
