“Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.”

1 Peter 1:13
In old Star Trek episodes when danger threatened the starship Enterprise, Captain Kirk gave the order from his captain’s chair, “Red alert! Warp speed!” At his word, sirens blared and stars blurred while the ship jumped forward.

Believers also face “red alert” situations. Our enemy, Satan, opposes us from the moment we confess our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Peter had wrestled with Satan, that’s for sure. So now an older and wiser Peter sounds the “red alert” for God’s people.

First, beware of the dangers of enemy territory. Resist when the tempter’s allure confuses you or makes you feel indifferent. Staying alert when all seems well is a spiritual discipline. Your ascended Lord sent the Holy Spirit to help you.

Second, set your hope on ultimate victory, a future guaranteed by the promised return of Christ. The headlines may shout doom and disaster, but the Scriptures declare His triumph.

Our hope isn’t wishful thinking, but the certainty that Jesus will return to establish the new creation in which we’ll live forever with Him.
