“The LORD turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”

Psalm 40:1-2
In 2001 on 9/11, Lolita Jackson was on a fast-track at Morgan Stanley working in the World Trade Center. She and her coworkers were in a meeting that Tuesday morning when she saw a plane fly into the first of the two towers. Her boss immediately said, “It’s time to go,” so she and the others took the elevator down as the second plane hit their tower.

It felt like the building was swaying. She prayed, “I’m going to die. Lord, overwhelm me with a sense of peace.” And He did exactly that! Lolita did escape death, and she was profoundly aware of the Lord’s mighty hand that saved her. In the following months, she left her high-paying, high-intensity job. She became more involved in lay ministry at her church. She testifies that God often puts us through suffering to draw us closer to Him and to enable us to better minister to others in need.

The Lord will use any situation in our lives—be it horrifying like terrorist attacks or less consequential as you and I may face daily—to bring us to the place He wants us to be.
