“Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.’”

John 6:68-69
In general, the world of fishermen can be divided into the casual and the serious. When conditions are good, the casual fisherman loves it because it is relatively easy to catch all the fish he wants. But when the fish are tough to catch, only the determined types persist, the ones who truly love fishing regardless of how things go.

In John 6, we find Jesus being followed by many people who may or may not be true disciples. They’re more like the casual fisherman. After Jesus gives a challenging teaching about people needing to feed on Him to have eternal life, many in the crowd are discouraged and turn away. In one of Peter’s greatest statements, however, he declares that Jesus is the Son of God, and there is nowhere else to go to have eternal life. We see Peter’s display of a genuine faith that was deepening in love for God.

As we face the challenges that discipleship entails, our devotion to God grows out of His love for us and His perfect devotion to us in Christ. And miraculously, He makes us serious fishers of men!
