“When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, ‘I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.’”

Luke 7:9
A centurion in Jesus’ day would have been a sergeant-major in today’s military. He’d be a high-ranking officer, commanding great respect.

The centurion in this Luke passage cared very much about a beloved servant of his who was dying. He was also a man of faith, knowing that if his authority was productive, how much more was the authority of God! So he reached out to Jesus. In both humility and confidence (even Jesus was amazed and marveled at the faith of this man!), he asked Him to just say the word so that his servant would be healed. Sure enough, at Jesus’ word, the servant was restored to health.

Over my many years of chaplaincy for law enforcement personnel, I have witnessed the power of God’s healing as situations have been brought before the Lord in fervent prayer. There have been relationships mended, addictions conquered, illnesses treated, and lives renewed. Not every outcome has been great. But the great God behind it all has been never-wavering, never far off, and never failing in keeping His promises.
