“Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.”
Psalm 107:8-9
We know of others whose situations in life are far more painful than ours—lives ravaged by war, torture, evil rulers, natural disasters, murder, etc. The believer reads a verse like Psalm 107:8 and wonders where God’s “unfailing love” is in heartrending tragedies. Furthermore, where is it in our own less-horrifying yet difficult spots?
Perhaps you’ve wrestled with the reality of suffering. Why must it be? What purpose does it serve? Think of this: Who appreciates the calm haven, the one who never left shore or the one who has braved the storm? Who deeply grasps the satisfaction of needs met by the Lord, the one who has everything or the one who has little? Whose life can know a degree of peace, the one who has felt secure in the Lord’s hand through trials or the one who frantically tries to solve it all on his own?
In our sin-stained world, our resources run out. But God gives us satisfaction for our needs through Jesus. Once satisfied, we find ourselves thanking Him for the problems that caused us to call out to Him in the first place.
