“Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors.”

Isaiah 53:12
My mother was ten years old when World War II began, but the day she remembers best is May 8, 1945, Victory in Europe Day. When Hitler formally and unconditionally surrendered to the Allied forces, celebrations broke out across the globe. People poured into the streets as Winston Churchill addressed the crowds, saying, “God bless you all. This is your victory. In our long history, we have never seen a greater day than this.”

Yet, when we compare VE Day’s joyful victory to the triumph of Jesus’ ascension, it seems like a dim reflection. Jesus defeated and disarmed the officers and armies of the spiritual world. He crushed Satan, the enemy behind all other enemies, and He did it at the very moment Satan thought Jesus was defeated. Jesus’ enemies were darker, and His victory was more complete.

In addition, Jesus’ public triumph at the cross, at the resurrection, and at the ascension brought honor to Him but poured shame on the devil and his minions.

Satan’s rule has ended. Jesus is King! We can stand in His victory today.
