“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.”

Colossians 3:16
As a chaplain for police officers, I’m privileged to lead a weekly study of God’s holy Word. I resonate with these thoughts about the Bible by Dr. Harold Sala in Why You Can Have Confidence in the Bible (2008): “The truth of this Book touches my life, my conduct, my attitudes, my money and how I spend it, as well as my thinking.” Psalm 119:105 reads, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” That “lamp” reveals my next step, giving me light for where I’m going next.

While living on Okinawa years ago, we always tried to avoid the venomous habu snake. At night we carried a flashlight to illuminate our path one step at a time. The beam of light shined ahead to make sure one of the deadly pit vipers wasn’t ten yards out.

That flashlight image reminds me of the Word of God which also points us to safety. I want my police officer friends to have confidence in it for each step they take. Most importantly, I want anyone I share it with to see that every page of it is pointing them to Jesus, the true rescuer of their souls.
