“He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
Psalm 23:3
Learning from our failures may bring growth and healing. But dwelling on those failures negatively will rob us of our confidence in the Lord. Our thoughts can become so unsettling that they effectively confine us to a solitary cell of defeat. The pity of it all is that we could be living in the freedom of all God has done and will do through us.
But what about my sins? you say.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
But what about my wasted years? you say.
“I will repay you for the years that the locusts have eaten” (Joel 2:25).
But what about all the financial and social messes I’ve made? you say.
“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:29).
I’ve failed so often that the gloom and defeat are consuming me.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).
