“This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.”

Deuteronomy 34:4
In the last couple of chapters of Deuteronomy you can read how the Lord kept Moses faithful, knowing that he would merely point to the Promised Land and not live in it. He would have to live for that eternal city.

Dear friends, the Lord has called us to rest in the Christ we’ve been given, not the land we’ve been given. This is not our home—He is. We cannot inhabit our eternal promised land yet, but we can behold it from afar through Jesus, our redeemer and rescuer.

As an Army chaplain, I recently went through training that exposed many of my weaknesses. I was made to suffer physically, psychologically, and spiritually. I was accused and condemned over and over, and I was unable to defend myself. At one point, I was asked, “Where is your God now?” But I felt a profound peace. I looked into the eyes of my accuser and said, “I fail every day, but my God does not fail.” Little did he know that he reminded me of the land that I am living for. He helped me to see it even as he made me feel the pains of my exile.
